About the work (english / deutsch)

About the work (english / deutsch)

The water-colour Mann mit grünem Horn (Man with a Green Horn) dates from the Seventies. It is the eye, which, like some prehensile device protrudes from the head, as if perception and the perceived had merged, as if the artist suffers this protrusion when seeing and viewing not owing to his "vision as a seer" but owing to his vulnerability. Dahn returns to this motif in 1990, this time in the shape of a nose, reminiscent of the story of Cyrano de Bergerac (1619 - 55) and perhaps it is also reminiscent of Alberto Giacomettis "Nose" (1947), which Jan Hoet once termed a "drill'. The nose, too, is a protrusion, a sensory organ, the form and size of which here express astonishment and concern. The expression which Walter Dahn pinpoints in all the faces he has painted over the years is one of defencelessness vis-à-vis that which the faces are seeing or viewing. They gaze in such a manner as to make sure that they can keep a distance between themselves and what they see when they are seeing with some inner eye.

VISIONS
An atmosphere of change
Opening May 24, 2013 at 07:30 pm
Start date May 25, 2013
End date Sep 08, 2013

For the first time an exhibition is dedicated extensively to the phenomenon of vision in contemporary art. In what way does it differ from the utopia, what energies does it hold for the active shaping of the future? Inspired by the first apparition of the Virgin Mary north of the Alps, the Herford apparition from the 10th century, “Visions” embarks on an unconventional, highly stimulating journey through a wide range of contexts and phenomena, allowing the viewer to trace the spirit and the atmosphere of visionary thought and formation.
