Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) in Kiew geboren, emigrierte 1905 mit ihren Eltern in die Vereinigten Staaten. Sie studierte in den zwanziger Jahren zunächst an der Art Students League bei Kenneth Hayes Miller. Anschließend nahm sie Unterricht bei dem Maler Hans Hofmann, assistierte dem mexikanischen Maler Diego Rivera bei Wandmalereien, lernte das Aktzeichnen bei George Grosz und nahm Einflüsse afrikanischer und mittelamerikanischer Kunst auf In den folgenden Jahren arbeitete Louise Nevelson als Bildhauerin, Malerin und Zeichnerin in New York. Zu den frühesten erhaltenen Arbeiten zählen in stromlinienförmiger Kurvatur ausgeführte Aktzeichnungen der dreißiger Jahre. Einen eigenen, charakteristischen Stil entwickelte sie mit ihren plastischen Werken, mit der Technik der Collage, mit der Verwendung von Objets trouvés und mit monumentalen Raumkonstruktionen. Zivilisatorischer Abfall, meistens aus Holz, wurde von der Künstlerin in schreinartigen Assemblagen zu poetischen Kompositionen neu geordnet, für die sie ausschließlich die Farben Schwarz, Weiß oder Gold verwendete.

Eines ihrer wichtigsten Werke ist das 1977 entstandene Environment "Mrs. N's Palace", das wie eine große Anthologie die Themen und Motive in sich vereint, die für das Werk von Louise Nevelson, die "große Architektin des Schattens und der Reflektion" über 25 Jahre bestimmend waren.

Zeit ihres Lebens ging es der Künstlerin darum, ihre Welt, ihr "Reich der Ästhetik", mit allen ihr zur Verfügung stehenden Mitteln zu inszenieren. Immer wieder thematisierte sie den permanenten Übergang, die Reise, den Tod und die Hochzeit - Themen, die wie Masken als Regulativ für ein Bild der Wirklichkeit dienen.

Bereits Mitte des Jahrhunderts zählte Nevelsons Werk zu den fortschrittlichsten seiner Zeit. Sie erhielt zahlreiche Preise und Auszeichnungen. Ihre Werke präsentierte sie in öffentlichen Sammlungen sowie in vielen Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen, zum Beispiel im Museum of Modern Art, im Whitney Museum of American Art, im Musée de la Ville de Paris, im Israel Museum und auf der "documenta" in Kassel.

Louise Nevelson starb 1988 in New York.
