AEROPLASTICS is pleased to present “Voices from the id,” the first Belgian exhibition of recent works by the Young British Artist John Isaacs. This extensive solo exhibition will include Isaacs’ recent sculptural works “Is more than this more than this”, “Clever Kid” and “Voices from the id”, along with 20 recent photographic works. AEROPLASTICS will also be exhibiting a video screening of “The Turning Point”, Isaac’s documentary film recording the incredible experiment he produced in 1999/2000. The experiment was designed to determine the effects of the new millennium on the animal kingdom, by observing the change in behaviour of Fiddler crabs found in the mangrove swamps of Trinidad. The gallery will also house works on loan to present an overview and developmental context for the introduction of this ecclectic artist.

Five months in production, “Is more than this more than this” represents a return to the absurd figuration first seen in Isaacs’ 1996 exhibition at the Saatchi gallery in London, combined with the viscerally grotesque themes explored in later anatomical works. In this way Isaacs presents a figure as both micro- and macro- cosm, an individual viewed from a fused societal and individual perspective. A contemporary vision of the classical figure of Atlas who no longer carries the Globe on his shoulders, but incorporates it into his being, so as to both support and inhabit it simultaneously.

John Isaacs was born in the UK but spent his childhood in Africa, Europe and America, something which has profoundly affected his world view and fuelled his discomfort at what he perceives as an intellectual fundamentalism. In a world dominated by ego, both cultural and individual, Isaacs selfconsciously questions the institutions set in place to bolster this historically perpetuated perspective, while at the same time recognising the absurdity of his desire to have yet another voice included in the momentum of the debate. Though his work often utilises a cutting black humour, it never breaks from the aesthetic spectacle necessary to seduce the viewer. In this way his work cuts through preconceptions, leaving the spectator in no doubt that they are viewing something not only of recogniseable, but of interest. Shying away from a politicised polemic – if there is a point to be made, it is beaten to a pulp in the works production and concealed behind a cubistic inclusionary mental agility – Isaacs prefers instead to lead us through familiar territory to a place of which we may have lost sight. For Isaacs art doesn’t exist as the starting point of a dialectically progressive discourse but as “the threadbare scrap of evidence upon which to hang the argument for an emotional continuity from cave to capital.”

La galerie AEROPLASTICS a le plaisir de présenter la première exposition en Belgique des récents travaux du Young British Artist, John Isaacs, intitulée « Voices from the id ». Cette importante exposition personnelle inclut les dernières sculptures de l’artiste – « Is more than this more than this » et « Clever Kid » –, 20 photographies récentes ainsi que le documentaire vidéo « The Turning Point » réalisé par John Isaacs. Ce documentaire relate l’expérience surprenante que l’artiste a effectuée en 1999/2000 et qui visait à évaluer les effets du nouveau millénaire sur le règne animal. Pour ce faire, John Isaacs a observé les changements de comportement des crabes violonistes des mangroves de Trinidad. En outre, la galerie présentera diverses œuvres prêtées. De la sorte, AEROPLASTICS offre une vue panoramique de l’œuvre éclectique de John Isaacs tout en retraçant son évolution artistique.

La sculpture « Is more than this more than this » a nécessité cinq mois de travail. Elle nous renvoie à la figuration absurde que John Isaacs nous avait fait découvrir pour la première fois lors de son exposition à la Saatchi Gallery de Londres en 1996. Mais elle offre également une vision tout à fait neuve de ce type de travail puisqu’elle se combine avec les thèmes viscéralement grotesques que l’artiste a exploré dans ces travaux anatomiques ultérieurs. La personne est envisagée dans son microcosme et dans son macrocosme. Elle s’aborde dans une perspective fusionnée de la société et de l’individu. « Is more than this more than this » est une vision contemporaine d’Atlas qui ne porte plus le monde sur ses épaules mais l’incorpore à son être, afin de le soutenir et de l’habiter simultanément.

Quoique né au Royaume-Uni, John Isaacs a passé son enfance en Afrique, en Europe et en Amérique. Cette enfance itinérante a profondément marqué sa vision du monde et alimente son malaise vis-à-vis de ce qu’il nomme le fondamentalisme intellectuel. Dans un monde dominé par l’égocentrisme culturel et individuel, Isaacs questionne les institutions mises en place pour soutenir cette perspective continuée de l’Histoire tout en percevant l’absurdité de son désir de vouloir faire entendre une voix supplémentaire dans la dynamique de ce débat. Son œuvre, toujours teintée d’un humour noir cinglant, ne rompt jamais avec l’esthétisme nécessaire pour séduire le spectateur. Ainsi, ses travaux s’immiscent dans les idées préconçues mais donnent aux spectateurs la certitude de regarder quelque chose de non seulement reconnaissable mais également digne d’intérêt. Isaacs évite soigneusement toute polémique politisée qu’il réduit à néant dans la production de ses œuvres et occulte derrière une agilité mentale cubiste inclusive. Il préfère nous emmener dans un territoire familier, jusqu’à un endroit que nous avions peut-être perdu de vue. L’art d’Isaacs n’existe pas en tant que commencement d’un discours qui progresse dans la dialectique mais en tant que « ce petit bout de preuve usé auquel on peut raccrocher la discussion en faveur d’une continuité émotionnelle de la caverne à la métropole ».
