In bed with Lucy & Dolly - Lifeline - SOS - Self Organizing Still-Life
Galerie Poller, Frankfurt am Main

"David Fried – Recent Works"
The New York born interdisciplinary artist David Fried presents recent works, which deal with fundamental common denominators and their potential recombination. Exploring our divers and labile environment, comprised of inidviduals – so called sovereign entities – entwined in a network that is constantly changing, his works speak of interdependent life, whereby the
periphery becomes the centre.
Fried's acoustically stimulated interactive sculptures "SOS - Self Organizing Still-Life" are compelling by their symbolically provocative simplicity, creating a live complex visual experience as the viewer is moved to forge perspectives on relationships,
life and the universe of thought.
David Fried's photographic works reveal relationships as delicate temporal architecture, emerging when the primary elements of life - water and air - get together. Reflecting further on the human condition, these images that resemble living cells called "In bed with Lucy and Dolly", take us on a biomorphical journey "from the Cambrian sea to the artificial womb". The title refers to Lucy (the early hominoid Mother), to Us (the Myth), and to Dolly the sheep (the Missing Link) in a dialogue that seeks orientation in a world in which man has moved from controlling the environment to the inescapable urge to invent our predeces-
sors.
As we have become genetic designers that continue to shape the global landscape and the future, we face new challanges
concerning the balance of nature to find solutions for the benefit of a sustainable, yet rapidly changing world.
Fried's works echo our process of seeking and learning as we plunge into the polarities of 21st century thought and deed.

Text by Prof. Dr. Norbert Bolz (foreword of the catalogue)

SOS – Self Organizing Still-Life
The Acronym S.O.S implies communication within the trust of an interdependent social system.
Fried has chosen “Self Organizing Still Life”, or SOS, as the working title for his ongoing series of sound-stimulated interactive
sculptures, which premiered in 1998.
Whatever the scale or materials used for the SOS, all of these works consist of solid spheres, which are stirred into motion by
ambient sound on a predetermined level object.
Audible sound is transformed into waves that stimulate each of the spheres silently into motion. Fried is able to give an individual character to each of the spheres, allowing them to respond and behave differently to live sound, though the artist is able
to give each entire SOS a particular tendency of choreographic response.
The resulting choreography is live and directly initiated by its environment. The action of the individual spheres and their interactions with one another are undetermined.
The spheres rearrange themselves in continually new patterns of elegantly fluid choreography. – Some kiss, some spin off alone, while others race head-on only to meet with a soft embrace- or swerve around one another, often changing the path
and destiny of each other without physical contact.
Each sphere is able to feel the other.
When an acoustic signal is no longer detected, the spheres come to rest in ever-different constellations: Still-Life.
