About the work

About the work

Rothschild has a multi-faceted background in Graphic Design, Photography, Computer Imaging, and Motion Picture Production. She has a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design, where she studied with Harry Callahan, and a MFA from New York University, where she studied with Paul Caponigro. From 1968 to 1974 Rothschild worked extensively as a free-lance photographer in the music field. From 1969 to 1971 she was on staff with the Joshua Light Show at the famed Fillmore East, creating special effects films, slides and graphics for the theater's performances. Active during one of rock's most fertile periods, the Fillmore East presented virtually every major rock artist of the time, including Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, the Allman Brothers, The Grateful Dead, and Tina Turner. Rothschild was considered the unofficial house photographer, and her unlimited access afforded her the opportunity to photograph numerous rock legends in rare performances and behind-the-scenes moments.

Rothschild also photographed numerous major concert events, including the 1969 Newport Festival, The Who's 1969 US Premiere of TOMMY, 1969 Isle of Wight Festival, and was on staff at the 1969 Woodstock Festival. Her photographs have appeared in The New York Times, Newsweek, The Villege Voice, Rolling Stone, and many other publications. Her work is also featured in many books, including The Photography of Rock, Bill Graham Presents: My Life inside Rock and Out, and Cherokee Mist: The Lost Writings of Jimi Hendrix. She is listed in Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who in Entertainment.

Rothschild has been producing and directing documentaries since 1969 with special emphasis on films about social issues as revealed through the lives of people in the arts. Her films have been shown around the world at festivals including Sundance, London, Edinburgh, and the Festival dei Popoli in Florence, Italy. Among the many museums that have showcased her work are The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and the National Gallery of Art. She lectures frequently at schools, museums and universities around the world. Since 1985, Rothschild has divided her time between New York and Rome, Italy, where she is developing several new projects, including a book and CD-ROM of her rock photography. She continues to work with digital photography using Adobe Photoshop on the Macintosh PowerPC computer platform.
