About the work

About the work

Jules Franck Mondoloni is a born sculptor who bears a soul forged by the multi-millennia tradition of the sculptors of the megaliths from his native island Corsica. He finds no challenge in sculpture. He has turned to painting for the adventure in his self-imposed exigency and his great love of the art of painting. The armature of his painting is in his drawing, "engraving on paper realistic drawings in the classic tradition", to which he puts color which he uses as a poet where light induces its foundation. In 1968 during the barricades of the French student revolt in Paris, Jules Franck Mondoloni was in the National School for the preparation of drawing and sculptor professors. His dreams of studying painting were crushed when he was told that painting was dead. Nonetheless, he independently went to the Louvre and other museums throughout Europe as a dedicated visitor to conscientiously study the great masters: Poussin, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Delacroix, Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Rodin, Michelangelo, as well as antiquity: Egyptian, Greek, American, Asiatic, and the art of the Cathedrals, and, so called, "primitive art". He is an avid photographer and writer. His personal quest is the study of painting and the Arts.

Works On Paper By Jules Franck Mondoloni
Throughout his drawings, Jules features an ideal form. Sometimes, it is like one of the youths on holiday in Corsica, fresh and flower-like. Other times, it is Michelangelo-inspired, powerful and muscular. And even other times it is of a model or dream of himself. His drawings are not studies for tableaux or large scale works, nor are they of actual individuals from his past. Instead, Jules' drawings arise from emotion; the creation of the images fulfills a need. For example, "Dream of a Falling Angel(1985)" and "Falling Angel (1985)" are from a period of distress and emotional turbulence in his life.
In 1996 Jules arrived for the first time to New York City. To commemorate this visit, he begins the "bridge-collage" of then the 100-year old Williamsburg bridge, dedicated it to Jean-Michel Basquiat and William S. Burroughs. Today, his classic figurative drawings from Corsica and Paris of the 1970's, are combined with the graffiti-ridden decayed scraps from the Williamsburg bridge in 1996. The poetry interjected within some of the pieces are similar in motivation and style. It is striking how the drawings from 20 years ago and the spontaneous line of the collection of scraps overlap. These iconoclastic combinations layer image over image, word over word, and time within time. This seeming complexity, however, is a red herring; it is a place into which the artist escapes. As the similarity in line exposes, the collage is in essence the new medium with which the ideal form is drawn.
