About the work

About the work

“Evolution – a gradual change in the characteristics of living things to a more complex form.”

I have chosen this title for my new work because I feel it describes the development that my work has currently taken. This new work is exciting and challenging and alters the emphasis in my paintings from the obvious to the mysterious, the traditional to the contemporary.

Symbolism has always been an important element in my work, and I have used it extensively over the past few years giving objects in my paintings 2 or 3 meanings.

My interest in symbolism has developed further by my research into the world of Alchemy. I have often been intrigued by the rich symbolism, the use of imagery, secrecy and mythology surrounding this mystical Art. By taking these symbols literally rather than imbuing objects with meanings I will have simplified and directed myself and the viewers attention towards a more focussed vision.

There has also been a shift in the way I work, as I began to produce these paintings I began experimenting with watercolour and acrylic paint. Using texture and surface pattern enmeshed together to create a worn, concealed, obscured, esoteric feeling to some of the pieces, I feel I am getting closer to describing the subject matter in a visual sense. These paintings were enjoyable to create and I hope this has been transmitted to the viewer.

For a long time I have been pushing the boundaries of still life painting and this has evolved a step further by the introduction of new compositions and pictorial solutions. I have also been doing a lot of figure drawing/painting; this will eventually be pulled into my work to give it an added human dimension.
Angus McEwan, R.S.W.
