Geboren 1947 in Südfrankreich, lebt und arbeitet in Paris. Chambas ist einer der bekanntesten Vertreter der figurativen Malerei in Frankreich. Er bevorzugt große Formate, hat in Paris einige Metrostationen gestaltet und ist auch als Bühnenbildner geschätzt. Er hat für die Pariser Oper gearbeitet und 1982 für die Salzburger Festspiele das Szenenbild zu Peter Handkes "Über die Dörfer” geschaffen. In Folge gestaltete er für den Verlag Widrich eine Reihe von Salzburg-Lithographien (vergriffen) und schließlich eine Serie zu österreichischen Dichtern
