The Japanese artist On Kawara, born in Aichi-ken in 1932, has lived and worked in New York since 1965.

Date Paintings, 1966 to 1990
On January 4th 1966 On Kawara began the first Date Painting in his "TODAY" series. The picture in this collection titled FEBRUARY 7, 1966 is one of the earliest works in this series. 25 years have passed since then, and for this room On Kawara has chosen a painting to represent each year.
In the Sixties On Kawara completed a painting almost every day. Since then the output has varied between 37 and 241 paintings.
The date itself denotes the present, calls to mind the past and also implies the future and the history that is bound up with it. This is similar to the cycle of paintings by Gerhard Richter entitled October 18th 1977, which reflects an entire period of recent German history, or the novel Ulysses by James Joyce, which takes over 1000 pages to describe a single day in the life of Leopold Bloom in Dublin. Where Andy Warhol uses the 29th of March 1962 to turn the umpteen-thousand-fold reproduction of a title page of the Daily News back into a hand painted original, On Kawara counterposes the painted actuality of his canvas to the wide scope of communication of daily reality, by adding to each package a newspaper cutting from the daily press.

The frieze-like arrangement of the paintings in this room gives to a contemplative experience of looking and reflecting. Painting follows painting, date follows date. The painting and the day are equated, and represent the materialisation of time - the created work enables us to grasp this in real terms. The painting, as a lasting and timeless form, seems to contradict the theme of passing time. But the Date Paintings also point to today and to the real life of the viewer, to his own ageing. The dates become a mirror of the here and now.

The annual output of Date Paintings is accompanied by notes collected in ring binders ("Journals") which serve as an ongoing inventory. They are jotted down in the language of the particular country in which On Kawara lived at the beginning of the year in question. A calendar acquired in that country contains entries recording the size and date of the pictures painted. Samples of the actual paints used in the individual paintings are pasted into the "Journals". A selection of black and white photographs documents the paintings in the studio or the places in which the paintings of that year originated. Finally, the date paintings are listed in the "Journal" by month, complete with a serial number and their respective subtitle.

Since 1968 On Kawara has made similar notes documenting very ordinary activities, in the journals I READ, I WENT and I MET. In 1969-1970 he completed the ten volumes work ONE MILLION YEARS - PAST, which stretches from 1969 AD back to the year 998031 BC. The corresponding work ONE MILLION YEARS FUTURE, completed 1980-1987, begins in 1981 AD and ends in the year 1001980 AD. This work also consists of 10 volumes. "I would like to type out all the numbers of a million years and put them together in a book! If I can put 500 years on a sheet of paper, I will need 2000 pages for this work, and the history of mankind will only take up the last 10 pages!"

The telegrams which On Kawara has been sending since 1970 carry the message I AM STILL ALIVE.
On the 6th of June 1991 On Kawara was 21,348 days old.

Date Paintings von 1966 - 1990
Am 4. Januar 1966 beginnt On Kawara mit dem ersten Date Painting (Datumsbild) seiner "TODAY" Serie. Das Bild mit dem Titel FEBRUARY 7, 1966 in dieser Sammlung gehört zu den frühesten Werken dieser Serie. 25 Jahre sind seitdem vergangen und stellvertretend für jedes Jahr wählte On Kawara ein Bild für diesen Raum aus.

In den sechziger Jahren entstand fast täglich ein Bild. Die Jahresproduktion schwankt seitdem zwischen 37 und 241 Bildern.

Das Datum als solches bezeichnet Gegenwart, erinnert an Vergangenheit und impliziert die Zukunft und damit verbundene Geschichte, ähnlich dem Gemäldezyklus Gerhard Richters mit dem Titel 18. Oktober 1977, der eine ganze Periode jüngster deutscher Geschichte reflektiert, oder dem Ulysses Roman von James Joyce, der auf über 1000 Seiten einen einzigen Tag im Leben des Leopold Bloom in Dublin beschreibt. Während Andy Warhol mit dem 29. März 1962 die zigtausendfache Reproduktion einer Titelseite des Daily News wieder zum handgemalten Original macht, stellt On Kawara der gemalten Realität des Bildes die weitgehende Vermittlung der Wirklichkeit eines Tages gegenüber, in dem er den Aufbewahrungsschachteln die Zeitungsausschnitte der jeweiligen Tagespresse beifügt.

In der friesartigen Reihung der Bilder dieses Raumes entsteht ein kontemplatives Moment des Betrachtens und des Bedenkens. Es folgt Bild auf Bild, Datum auf Datum. Die Gleichsetzung von Bild und Tag als Materialisierung von Zeit - durch das geschaffene Werk wird sie real faßbar. Das Bild als beständige Form von Zeitlosigkeit scheint der Thematisierung des Verlaufes von Zeit zu widersprechen. Die Date Paintings verweisen aber auch auf das Heute und auf die Lebenswirklichkeit des Betrachters, also auf sein eigenes Älterwerden. Die Daten werden zum Spiegel für das Hier und Jetzt. Einer Inventarisierung vergleichbar, begleiten Aufzeichnungen in Ringbüchern ("Journals") die Jahresproduktion der Date Paintings. Sie sind in der Sprache des Landes verfaßt, in dem On Kawara zu Beginn des jeweiligen Jahres lebte. Ein in diesem Land erworbener Kalender verzeichnet Größe und Datum der gemalten Bilder. Muster der für die einzelnen Bilder verwendeten Originalfarben sind in das "Journal" eingeklebt. Eine Auswahl von Schwarzweißfotos dokumentiert die Bilder in der Ateliersituation bzw. die Entstehungsorte der Bilder des jeweiligen Jahres. Schließlich sind im "Journal" die Datumsbilder nach Monaten aufgelistet, durchnumeriert und mit dem jeweiligen Untertitel versehen.

Seit 1968 entstehen vergleichbare Aufzeichnungen, die ganz alltägliche Handlungen dokumentieren, in den Journalen I READ, I WENT und I MET. Von 1969-1970 entstand das zehnbändige Werk ONE MILLION YEARS - PAST, das von 1969 AD (n.Chr.) bis in das Jahr 998031 BC (v.Chr.) zurückreicht. Ein entsprechendes Werk von 1980-1987 ONE MILLION YEARS - FUTURE beginnt 1981 AD (n.Chr.) und endet im Jahr 1001980 AD (n.Chr.). Dieses Werk umfaßt ebenfalls zehn Bände. "Ich möchte die Zahlen einer Million Jahre tippen und in einem Buch zusammenfassen! Wenn ich 500 Jahre auf einem Bogen Papier festhalten kann, dann benötige ich für diese Arbeit 2000 Blatt, und die Geschichte der Menschheit findet sich lediglich auf den letzten zehn Seiten wieder!"

Die Telegramme, die On Kawara seit 1970 verschickt, tragen die Botschaft I AM STILL ALIVE.

Am 6. Juni 1991 war On Kawara 21.348 Tage alt.
