Born in Fukuoka in Japan in 1960, Hirakawa studied applied sociology at Toyo University in Tokyo and by 1987 had travelled round almost 20 coutries for study purposes.

"A Temptation to be a Man"
The title of Hirakawas piece, "A Temptation to be a Man" is enigmatic. To whom does he refer? To himself or to the woman portrayed? I believe it refers more to himself. But how does he understand the statement? If he, as a man, is tempted to be a man, does not this presuppose that he feels himself to be a woman? Is the title perhaps an answer to "Rrose Sélavy", the legendary portrait photo of Marcel Duchamp Man Ray took in New York in 1921 that shows Duchamp in a feminine stance and with a feminine appearance? Or is the temptation to be a man that which could prevent the artist from continuing his existence as an artist? In 1990 Hirakawa wrote in his ‘No more pains of Isaac Newton’: "A homosexual is a bisexual. A bisexual desire is an assault to achieve assimilation, and it does not sexually discriminate its subjects. However, if the subject is a male, it holds its desire by subconsciously overlapping a female image upon it. This bisexual = homosexuality is one of universal human nature."

"Die Versuchung ein Mann zu sein"
Rätselhaft ist der Titel von Hirakawas Arbeit: "A Temptation to be a Man" ("Die Versuchung ein Mann zu sein"). Auf wen bezieht er diesen Titel? Auf sich oder die abgebildete Frau? Ich denke doch mehr auf sich selbst. Aber wie versteht er diese Aussage? Wenn er, als Mann, der Versuchung ausgesetzt ist, ein Mann zu sein, setzt denn das nicht voraus, daß er sich als Frau empfindet? Ist der Titel möglicherweise die Antwort auf "Rrose Sélavy" von Marcel Duchamp, jenes legendäre Porträt, das der Fotograf Man Ray 1921 in New York von Duchamp gemacht hat und das diesen in Haltung und Aussehen als weibliche Erscheinung zeigt? Oder ist die "Versuchung ein Mann zu sein" das, was den Künstler von seinem Sein als Künstler abhalten könnte? 1990 schreibt Hirakawa in "No more pains of Isaac Newton": "Ein Homosexueller ist ein Bisexueller. Das bisexuelle Begehren ist ein gewalttätiger Akt, die Verschmelzung zu vollenden. Menschen werden dadurch nicht diskriminiert. Wie dem auch sei, ist die Person männlich, verbindet sie ihr Begehren mit einem weiblichen Bild. Diese bisexuell-homosexuelle Komponente liegt der universalen, menschlichen Natur zugrunde."
