Eros Series
Photo Emulsion of Rives Paper

In her Fros Series, Sylvie Germain Covey deconstructs and reconstructs photographic images. In so doing, she uses the most "realistic" of media - photography ? to create scenes that never existed in reality.

For the past two years, Covey has photographed models in her studio. After thousands of negatives and countless proofs, she has superimposed and mixed images to create her own vision of Eros. Thus she presents us with a delicate and sensuous intermingling of bodies in works such as Walter and Laura, even though the two models have met only in the artist' s imagination.

As an accomplished printmaker and an experienced photographer, Sylvie Covey has developed new techniques combining photography and printmaking. In the current series, photographic images are produced using an emulsion on Arches paper, the noble materials of the artist. The result is work with the immediacy of photography, yet without the ready?made look we so often associate with the medium. Rather, she give us the depth and sensibility of aquatint.

Sylvie Germain Covey was born in Paris in 1954 and became a U. S. citizen in 1989. She studied printmaking at the École des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, and currently teaches printmaking at the Arts Students league, the Art Center of Northern New Jersey, the Newark Museum, and the Manhattan graphics Center.
