Exhibition at Massimo Audiello

Exhibition at Massimo Audiello

Massimo Audiello is pleased to announce the first solo show by Anna Sew Hoy. The exhibition will open Friday, February 1st and run through March 9th 2002.

Anna Sew Hoy was born 1976 in Auckland, New Zealand.
The artist now lives and works in New York City.

Most of the exhibition consists of sculptures, although she has applied herself to murals, photography and drawing as well as ceramics. Her sensibility for different media, material and texture lead her to discarded objects, waste and urban trash as a resource for imaginative stimulus and visual solution.

Anna Sew Hoy is a quintessentially American artist. She is Chinese, raised in Los Angeles, so she is a synthesis of a historically rich immigrant history and new western ideology. Sew Hoy has combined the American flair for elaborating junk with an Asian aesthetic, crafting sculptural arrangements of garbage with the grace of a Zen garden and the lightness of a valley girl.

Her fascination with “the rock” seems to reference an archetypal idea of sculpture. Sew Hoy plays on our primal experience of being confronted by a natural three-dimensional presence. Her constructed boulders seem to crush whatever crosses their path, mostly children’s bicycles…for now. They seem to have the ominous possibility of swallowing an even greater catch; in this way her work recalls the primordial chaos from which everything evolves and returns.

Ultimately, the simplicity of her material and style is fashioned with a wit and humor that is aware of larger schemes, schemes where our daily lives simply appear and disappear like clouds in the sky.
