Hammering Man
The Hammering Man is based on a concept dating from 1980 and, right from the start, was intended as a charismatic sign for the working population. Its appearance is that of a cut-out, a deliberately anonymous figure like a shadowy silhouette.

Jonathan Borofsky's Hammering Man tells us, as in a fairy-tale, that the individual can do almost anything, but that he cannot go beyond his own physical clock. The rhythm of his breathing determines the rhythm of his work and even measures the rhythm of his life. The Hammering Man is a simile. On the other hand, the Hammering Man demands the attention of the public.

The material of Borofsky's work is the stuff that dreams are made of. This means that he also regards the contradictory logic of these dreams, the drifting apart of time and space, the inversion and interweaving of proportion as part and parcel of his work. The dream book (Dreams, 1973-81) he published in 1981 for his exhibition at the Kunsthalle Basel shows that the form he gives the dreams is the decisive factor, and that the innovative moment in the inspiration of this formal syntax influences the way we approach his many drawings and even large scale sculptures.

Hammering Man
