In the early Seventies, Alighiero Boetti and Anne-Marie Sauzeau-Boetti began to investigate the thousand longest rivers of the world. Now this might then seem like an easy task, but it certainly is not. The statements on the respective length of a river vary considerably. The Boettis consequently wrote to many specialized institutes around the world in order to obtain the most precise data possible on the length of the rivers. For the question of how you measure the length of a river, from the source to the mouth, is by no means standardized.

In 1982, the corresponding silk embroidery produced in Afghanistan first went on display, at documenta 7. Like a musical score, the white letters and numbers meander, line for line, across the fluctuating background in different green tones, beginning with the Nile/White Nile with its 6,671 kilometers, and ending with the Agusan, with 386 kilometers. Back then in Kassel, a music stand was placed in front of the monumental work with a thousand-page long, red bound book. It bore the title Classifying - The Thousand Longest Rivers in the World, 1970-77, (Rome, 1977). Each page is devoted to a river. The sequence is identical to that of the embroidery with the title I mille fiumi più lunghi del mondo. Footnotes inform the reader about serious discrepancies in the different data provided and the origin of such.

What status does the work have in Boetti's oeuvre? A classifying order intervenes in the powerful disorder of rivers and currents which have shaped the geology of our earth for millions of years. The course of these rivers with their many branches is itself subject to the law of chance and regularity. If order behaves to disorder as chance does to necessity, then TIME is the third term which first creates a harmony of the antipoles of life and death, arrival and departure. Alighiero Boetti’s work is a metaphor for the flow of time, which can never be uniform, because it develops always from specific preconditions and circumstances.

However, the question arises why this work was embroidered in Afghanistan by third persons. I think, because Boetti took the idea of the third term literally, because embroidering and weaving is itself inscribed as the flow of time in a culture he was very close to.

Die tausend längsten Flüsse der Welt
In den frühen siebziger Jahren begannen Alighiero Boetti und Anne-Marie Sauzeau-Boetti, nach den tausend längsten Flüssen der Welt zu forschen. Wer glaubt, dies sei eine leichte Arbeit gewesen, irrt. Die Angaben über die jeweilige Länge eines Flusses variieren beträchtlich. So schrieben sie weltweit viele spezialisierte Institute an, um möglichst genaue Längenangaben zu eruieren. Denn, in der Tat, die Frage, wie man die Länge eines Flusses mißt, von der Quelle bis zur Mündung, ist keineswegs geregelt.

1982 war die entsprechende, in Afghanistan ausgeführte Seidenstickerei erstmals auf der documenta 7 zu sehen. Einer Partitur gleich, durchwandern die weißen Buchstaben und Zahlen, Zeile um Zeile, das in verschiedenen Grüntönen fluktuierende Feld, angefangen beim Nil/Weißen Nil mit 6671 Kilometern, endend mit dem Agusan, 386 Kilometer. Vor dem monumentalen Werk befand sich damals in Kassel ein Notenständer mit einem tausend Seiten umfassenden, rot eingebundenen Buch. Es trägt den Titel Classifying - The Thousand Longest Rivers in the World, 1970-77, (Rom 1977). Jede Seite ist einem Fluß gewidmet. Die Reihenfolge ist mit jener der Stickerei mit dem Titel Die tausend längsten Flüsse der Welt identisch. Fußnoten informieren bei gravierenden Abweichungen über die verschiedenen Angaben und deren Herkunft.

Was hat das Werk für einen Stellenwert im Schaffen von Boetti? Eine klassifizierende Ordnung greift in die gewaltige Unordnung von Flüssen und Strömen ein, welche die Erdgeschichte über Millionen von Jahren geprägt haben. Der Verlauf dieser vielverzweigten Flüsse ist selbst dem Gesetz von Zufall und Gesetzmäßigkeit unterworfen. Wenn sich die Ordnung zur Unordnung wie der Zufall zur Notwendigkeit verhält, dann ist ZEIT jenes Dritte, das überhaupt erst die Gegenpole als Leben und Sterben, als Kommen und Gehen harmonisiert. Alighiero Boettis Werk ist eine Metapher für den Fluß der Zeit, der nie einheitlich sein kann, weil er sich stets aus den Voraussetzungen und Bedingungen heraus entwickelt.

Jedoch stellt sich die Frage, weshalb denn dieses Werk in Afghanistan von Dritten gestickt wurde. Ich denke, weil Boetti das Dritte wörtlich genommen hat, weil das Sticken und Weben in einer ihm sehr nahestehenden Kultur selbst als ein Fluß von Zeit eingeschrieben ist.
