About the work

About the work

Parc de Mer
The Parc de Meer project is on the site of the old Ajax football club stadium. A large housing estate is being built on this reclaimed land and I am collaborating with Dutch artist, Harald Vlugt, making several different kinds of art for the new estate.

Our ideas include a design for the floorscape which runs the length and breadth of the estate; designs for the columns at the base of the three tallest buildings; a sculpture motif which runs the full height of the three tallest buildings; and designs for the main street name signs.

All of our ideas revolve around football, we are very aware of the Ajax connection, and the idea of "polder", land reclaimed from the sea. In our efforts to link all of the designs together we have tried to create a house style.

The floor design is simple enough. At first we considered marking out a football pitch to fit into the estate but instead we will mark out a series of circles. The circles start from the viewpoint of a kick-off point on a football pitch but become more like ripples as the area of the circles become wider and wider. Different kinds of stone will be used to create this effect, a lighter one set against a dark tone.

THE VAK BUILDING
The sculptural motif uses real memorabilia from the old stadium, concrete bollards, and stand signs. They appear in a vertical line, a red and white check like a measuring device is created, the stand signs VAK-H, VAK-G, and so on running through the alphabet are attached to the side of the building. The bollards are set into the white part of the check at the bottom of each building. The check is marked by an additional blue line as a reminder of the water level and the fact that these buildings stand on reclaimed land. The VAK buildings are ten storeys tall and will be visible all over Amsterdam.

THE STREET SIGNS
They take their cue from the VAK buildings using the same check to enclose their designs. There are six main streets - Wembleylaan; Praterlaan; etc. Harald and I have designed a set of ceramic tiles for each one. Each sign makes reference to Ajax and famous games against foreign competitors for the European Cup. The check design around each sign refers to the opposing team's colours and the scores in the actual match. There are a lot of red and white checks because the opposing teams had much the same colours as Ajax. Wembleylaan is green and white because it refers to a game against Panathanikos played at Wembley Stadium in London where the score was 2:1.

In each of the street name designs we have tried to make reference to the stadiums where the games were played; the opposing team's colours; and action from supporters and players. Three of the street names are illustrated here, they will be copied onto ceramic tiles and fired. They look a bit like banners or emblems. We think they should not only identify where you are on the estate but also try to reflect the passion and colour of the game, as well as conforming to our house style. Once the ceramic tiles are made they will be framed into the fabric of the buildings. They will also be rather large.

The figurative work within the designs comes from the designs for the nine columns on the estate. Three columns sit at the foot of each of the three VAK buildings. There are nine columns but quite a few more designs fitted around each of these. We designed horizontal landscapes featuring a football match played on rough terrain, again a reference to polders. The drawing in this design comes from comics, football comics, war comics and a few other sources. Each design is never-ending, has no start and no finish. Harald and I very much liked the idea of someone leaning against a column, adult or child, following themselves around the column to get the whole picture.

Like the street signs, each design will be made into ceramic tiles. For the columns we have three different sizes of tile, 10, 15 and 20 centimetres so that a horizontal strip of six tiles might appear on one column, 8 tiles on the next and 12 on the third column.

We have also designed single tile images which may popup up on the columns at random and two of the columns will consist almost entirely of just coloured tiles. The word "Ajax" is picked out in one but simply looks like a pattern, while a green spiral appears on another.
