Irena Popiashvili and Marisa Newman of SUITE 106 are pleased to announce the first New York solo exhibition of New York-based artist Mark Woods. Woods's new series, "Access", investigates a contradiction inherent in the photographic medium: a photograph is a portal to the world, yet its two-dimensionality precludes entering that world. Woods's favorite theme in photography's history is this dialogue between the transparency of the window and the impenetrable surface of the picture plane. The subjects of his pictures are flat, rectangular surfaces--such as doors, gates, windows, ventilation units, and drain grates--that regulate or withhold access, but never in the way or to the extent they seem to at first glance. Their ambivalence as to how or how much they limit access can be better understood after closer inspection and contemplation of the large, finely detailed color prints that represent them.
Mark Woods’s work is in the permanent collections of The Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and the Yale University Art Gallery, and has been shown in group exhibitions at Venetia Kapernekas Fine Art, PLUS ULTRA, and GAle GAtes et al., among other galleries.
Woods graduated from Harvard with a bachelor's degree in philosophy and completed his MFA at Arizona State University.
The brochure for the exhibition features a text on Woods’s Access series by Virginia Heckert, Curator of Photography at the Norton Museum of Art.
Gallery Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11A.M. - 6P.M.
