Frankfurt / Main, May 1, 1932: Gisèle Freund photographs the last demonstrations and public meetings held by the Left before the Nazis seize power. Only one year later, the character of the day and the pictures that existed of it fell prey to the Nazi idea of mass rallies. In 1932, Gisèle Freund was still a student at the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt. She attended lectures by Karl Mannheim, Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno and was working on a dissertation on French 19th century photography. Later, Freund was to become famous for her portrait photographs of authors like Virginia Woolfe, James Joyce, André Malraux, Jean Cocteau, Simone de Beauvoir, André Breton, Jean-Paul Sartre, Walter Benjamin, Paul Valéry or André Gide. And she was to work as a photo reporter for such legendary institutions of photo journalism as LIFE magazine and the MAGNUM agency.
The photographs from Frankfurt, which are exhibited here for the first time, are more than just visual documents of a somewhat under-exposed chapter of the city's history. These photographs are, above all, testimonies to the photographic gaze with which a merely 24-year old student endeavored to establish the role of the camera in the political project of the Left, a project in which she herself participated as a member of a socialist student group.
Freund's choice of section for the photos shows that she rejects there being a mythical order of the mass. Instead, she insists emphatically on the reality of those cropped sections: There are too many to present them all, they would burst the frame asunder; and the raised and distanced location of the camera, which associates itself with the gaze of the speakers, cannot master them all. In the invisibility of the picture created with photographic means there remain many whose variety und differentness evades the dominant gaze of the one person.
The fact that only one year later this gaze of the one out over the aesthetically disciplined mass became the measure of all things, that precisely the any, the many who populate Freund's photographs of May 1, 1932, relinquished their personalities and also that the right of many of them to live was also contested, imbues Freund's pictures with that dimension of the painful with which history asserts itself over nostalgia. Gisèle Freund was advised on May 30, 1933, one year after the photographs in Frankfurt, by an official who had to rubber-stamp her placards, to leave the country quickly, since the Gestapo would arrest her whole group the very next day. She heeded his advice.

Frankfurt am Main am ersten Mai 1932: Gisèle Freund photographiert die letzten Demonstrationen und Kundgebungen der Linken vor der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten. Bereits im Jahr darauf verfallen der Charakter dieses Tages und die Bilder, die es von ihm gibt, den nationalsozialistischen Vorstellungen von Massenkundgebungen. 1932 ist Gisèle Freund Studentin am Institut für Sozialforschung in Frankfurt. Sie hört Karl Mannheim, Max Horkheimer und Theodor W. Adorno und bereitet eine Dissertation über französische Photographie des 19. Jahrhunderts vor. Später wird Freund für ihre Porträtaufnahmen von Schriftstellern wie Virginia Woolfe, James Joyce, André Malraux, Jean Cocteau, Simone de Beauvoir, André Breton, Jean-Paul Sartre, Walter Benjamin, Paul Valéry oder André Gide berühmt werden und als Photojournalistin für legendäre Institutionen des Photojournalismus wie dem Magazin LIFE und der Agentur MAGNUM arbeiten.
Die Aufnahmen aus Frankfurt, die hier zum ersten Mal gezeigt werden, sind mehr als visuelle Dokumente eines nicht übermäßig beachteten Kapitels der Stadtgeschichte; vor allem sind diese Photographien Zeugnisse eines photographischen Blicks, mit der eine gerade 24jährige die Rolle und den Ort der Kamera im politischen Projekt der Linken auslotet, an dem sie sich auch als Mitglied einer sozialistischen Studentengruppe beteiligt.
Freunds Ausschnitt dementiert eine mythische Ordnung der Masse. Er beharrt vielmehr und emphatisch auf seiner Wirklichkeit als Ausschnitt: Es sind zu viele, um alle abzubilden, sie sprengen den Rahmen; auch der erhöhte und distanzierte Standort der Kamera, der sich mit dem Blick der Redner assoziiert, kann sie nicht beherrschen. Im photographisch geschaffenen Unsichtbaren des Bildes bleiben es viele, deren Vielzahl und Unterschiedlichkeit dem herrschenden Blick des Einen entzogen bleibt.
Daß nur ein Jahr später dieser Blick des Einen auf die ästhetisch disziplinierte Masse zum Maß aller Dinge wird, daß gerade den Vielen, die Freunds Photographien vom ersten Mai 1932 bevölkern, nicht nur ihre Individualität, sondern oft auch das Recht zu Leben bestritten wird, gibt Freunds Bildern jene Dimension des Schmerzhaften, mit der sich Geschichte über Nostalgie behauptet. Gisèle Freund hat am 30. Mai 1933, ein Jahr nach den Aufnahmen in Frankfurt, von einem Beamten, der ihre Plakate abstempeln mußte, den Rat bekommen, schnell auszureisen, da die Gestapo am nächsten Tag ihre ganze Gruppe verhaften würde. Sie hat den Rat befolgt.
