Biography

Biography

Rafael Navarro was bom in Zaragoza in 1940, in the bosom of a middle class family. He is the father of six children: César, Alijandro, Sergio, Eduardo, Isabel y Pablo.
His professional activity covers two different aspects: on the one hand he is managing director of a company, and the other, a plastic artist.

At around the twenty eight, he begins to develop a deep interest in photography field in which he will feel himsef at ease. After his first attempts portraying the world of reportage, thither sports ... he decides to focus on the field of plastic arts.

Rafael Navarro uses the photography as a way out to channel his tendency towards introversion and tell us about his life with total sincerity. His works collect not only his good moments, but especially all the bad ones, those in which he tests himself line a human being by recognising and facing his individual and social fears, trying to communicate in depth with the rest of the people.

His production comprises two types of works: one closed and moving around a specific idea; the other remains open and keeps growing trough the years. In regards to formats, dichotomy is once more present from conventional sizes to great assemblies.

Landscape; nudes, textures ... are his favourite motives, but always from a subjective point of view, taking contents out of their contexts, and materialising his feelings in ways that have very little to do with the objects in their real world.

Rafael Navarro combines his creative work with other activities in the same field. He coordinates exhibitions the Spanish photographers abroad; he participates in congresses and imparts courses about different subjects (the language of photography, the nude, ...) in Europe and America. In 1974 he was elected President of the Sociedad Fotográfica de Zaragoza, in 1976 he was named A.F.I.A.P. by the Federation Internationale de l'Art Photographique. In 1977 found together with Manel Esclusa, Joan Fontcuberta and Pere Fonrmiguera the group Alabern. In 1978 he was elected representative of the Consejo Latinoamericano de Fotografia in Spain and in 1985 member of the Joan Miró Foundation's Advisory Comittee in Barcelona.
