In General
American artist Paul Thek belongs to the same Generation as Claes Oldenburg, Walter De Maria, Robert Ryman, Andy Warhol and Dan Flavin - to name but a few of the better-known. Thek was an installation artist avant la lettre. Yet none of his major installations of the 1960s (The Tomb, 1967) or 70s (Ark, Pyramid, 1972) has survived, and the work that remains is fragmentary. These fragments include the work displayed in our Museum, the Birthday Cake sculpture (1967) and the paintings on newspaper from the 1970s. It was by a very fortunate stroke of luck indeed that these works found their way into the Museum für Moderne Kunst.

Gouaches on Newspaper
A rather different undertone in comparison to Birthday Cake or The Tomb prevails in the gouaches on newspaper (International Herald Tribune and New York Times), in which the fragility and spontaneity of the graphic medium becomes apparent. The eight works exhibited in the Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt am Main are only a fragment of the group. Whereas Andy Warhol transferred a magnified cover page of the Daily News, otherwise unaltered, onto canvas, Thek used the „original“ newspaper as the medium. It is interesting to note that Thek and Warhol actually collaborated in 1965, with Thek placing a square piece of flesh, as in the Birthday Cake, into a Brillo Box by Warhol, glazed on two sides. The works by Paul Thek shown here are palimpsests in which the ground of the images also has something to say. In the unpainted areas of the untitled work portraying a sunrise (International Herald Tribune, 3.12.1974), we can discern advertisements for Air India and an article disclaiming the notion that sex before a competition may be detrimental to an athlete’s sporting perfomance. This work is the clearest indication of Thek's proximity to the counterculture aesthetic that does not even call a halt at such kitsch and folksy motifs as the sunset with a Disneyland heart. The work Have a Good Life - a kind of applecore still-life with a greenish aura - conjures up the notoriously friendly and imperative „have a good day“ of everyday American life. On the other hand, the image suggests the eaten apple, hinting that „you can have your cake AND eat it“. In the context of the MMK collection, we are immediately reminded of Rémy Zaugg’s green text picture entitled And if, when I eat an unripe apple, acid green ceased to exist.

With Thek’s pictures one is always trying to find the code which would furnish us with a simple reading of the image. So we may be left wondering whether the powerful imagery of Prunes - a still life of three prunes on a white plate - might possibly have something to do with a certain rock band called „Electric Prunes" who just happened to be around at the time. The two works Red Sea (Thek visited Egypt in 1970) and Tangled Web, both 1975, plumb the depths of the mind. Even the title of the latter is typical of an artist who has epitomised the deep, dark dangerous side of art since the 60s. In the small gestural image itself, there is a vast store of information, particularly a highly topical motif that runs from the web motif of the film noir to Jackson Pollock’s web metaphors and the subjective signifier so often used today to indicate political intrigue.
Given all that we know about the artist Paul Thek, whose work, first and foremost, evokes a sense of transience, he may well have appreciated the refrain of Bruce Springsteen’s Atlantic City (Nebraska, Columbia Records, 1982): „Everything dies baby that’s a fact. But may be everything that dies some day comes back ..."

Allgemeines
Zur Generation des amerikanischen Künstlers Paul Thek gehören - um nur wenige bekannte Namen zu nennen - Claes Oldenburg, Walter De Maria, Robert Ryman, Andy Warhol, Dan Flavin. Thek war ein Installationskünstler avant la lettre. Doch keine seiner großen Rauminstallationen aus den 60er und 70er Jahren (z. B. The Tomb, 1967, Ark, Pyramid, 1972) ist erhalten geblieben, sein übriges Werk nur fragmentarisch. Zu diesen Fragmenten gehören die Arbeiten in diesem Raum, die Plastik Birthday Cake, 1967, und die Malereien auf Zeitungspapier aus den 70er Jahren. Durch einen glücklichen Zufall gelangten diese Arbeiten in das Museum für Moderne Kunst.

Gouachen auf Zeitungspapier
Im Gegensatz zu Birthday Cake oder The Tomb klingt in den Gouachen auf Zeitungspapier (International Herald Tribune und New York Times) ein anderer Ton an. In ihnen ist die Fragilität und Spontaneität des graphischen Mediums entfaltet. Die im Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt am Main versammelten acht Blätter stellen nur einen kleinen Teil dieser Werkgruppe dar. Hatte Andy Warhol ein Deckblatt der Daily News inhaltlich unverändert und vergrößert auf die Leinwand übertragen, nimmt Thek das „originale“ Zeitungsblatt als Bildträger. Interessanterweise hat es 1965 eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen Warhol und Paul Thek gegeben, als Thek eines der quadratischen Fleischstücke, wie sie auch in Birthday Cake eingesetzt sind, in eine Warholsche Brillo Box, nun an zwei Seiten verglast, einbrachte. Theks Bilder, die wir hier sehen, sind Palimpseste, denn der Bildgrund spricht mehr oder weniger mit. So erkennt man in dem Blatt ohne Titel (International Herald Tribune, 3. 12. 1974), das einen Sonnenaufgang darstellt, in den ungrundierten Zonen Reklame der Air India und einen Artikel, der sich gegen das Vorurteil wendet, Sex vor dem Wettkampf würde die sportlichen Leistungen von Athleten schwächen. Diese Arbeit zeigt am deutlichsten Theks Nähe zur Ästhetik der Gegenkultur, die auch vor kitschig-populären Motiven wie dem Sonnenaufgang mit dem Herz à la Walt Disney nicht halt macht. Die Arbeit Have a Good Life, eine Art Stilleben eines Apfelbutzens mit gemalter grünlicher Aura, erinnert einerseits an das notorisch gutwillige wie imperative „Have a good day“ der amerikanischen Alltagskultur, andererseits suggeriert das Bild des gegessenen Apfels, „that you can have your cake AND eat it.“ Im Kontext der Sammlung des MMK denkt man sofort an das grüne Text-Bild (1978-91) von Rémy Zaugg, das den Titel trägt: Und, wenn ich einen unreifen Apfel esse, das giftige Grün nicht mehr vorhanden wäre.

Bei den Gemälden von Thek sucht man ständig nach einem Code, der eine einfache Lesart ermöglicht. So kann man sich etwa fragen, ob das intensive Stilleben Prunes, drei Pflaumen auf weißem Teller, vielleicht etwas mit der Rock-Band jener Zeit den 'Electric Prunes’ zu tun hat. Eher psychographisch erscheinen die zwei Arbeiten Red Sea - 1970 reiste Thek nach Ägypten - und Tangled Web, beide aus dem Jahr 1975. Allein der Titel des letzteren Bildes (etwa: verheddertes Netz) ist bezeichnend für einen Künstler, der die untergründige, dunkle, gefährliche Seite der Kunst seit den 60er Jahren verkörpert. In dem kleinen, gestischen Bild selbst ist enorm viel aufgehoben, vor allem ein hoch aktuelles Motiv, das ein vom Netz-Motiv des Film Noir und von der Netz-Metapher bei Jackson Pollock informiertes subjektives Zeichen zu einer Chiffre noch heutiger, nicht zuletzt politischer Verstrickungen werden läßt.

Nach allem, was wir über den Künstler Paul Thek wissen, dessen Werk besonders die Erfahrung der Vergänglichkeit evoziert, hat ihm sicher der Refrain von Bruce Springsteens Atlantic City (Nebraska, Columbia Records, 1982) gefallen: „Everything dies baby that’s a fact. But may be everything that dies some day comes back...“
