Biography

Working out of her Virginia studio, Ms. Haden has been painting and exhibiting in the Washington, DC area since studying in art, and art history at Georgetown University (B.S. Languages & Linguistics) and George Washington University (M.A. Art History). Born in Nashville, Tennessee (French mother/American father, raised bilingual), the artist came to DC after living abroad in Paris, France.

Josephine Haden’s paintings are included in private and corporate collections in the United States and France. Her recent exhibitions include Trinity Gallery, Atlanta, Georgia (2003-4); The Vero Beach Museum of Art, Vero Beach, Florida (2003); ARTSPACE/Virginia Miller Galleries, Coral Gables-Miami, FL (2003); and Gallery K, Washington, DC (2002). Ms. Haden's work has also been shown at U.S. Embassies in Bogota, Colombia, and Yaounde, Cameroon; in Naples (FL) at Longstreth-Goldberg Gallery; in New Orleans at the Sylvia Schmidt Gallery and the Marguerite Oestreicher Gallery; in Virginia at Marymount University, Cox Communications, Capital One, and the McLean Project for the Arts; and in DC at the National Academy of Sciences, the Corcoran Museum of Art, Washington Project for the Arts, and Arnold & Porter; and in numerous juried competitions at the Arlington Arts Center, the Greater Reston Arts Center, the Ellipse-Arlington, and The Galleries-Alexandria (VA); at Strathmore Hall- Bethesda, and the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center, Frederick (MD); at Artists Equity exhibitions; and at the National Press Club, Georgetown University, and George Washington University (DC).

As featured in Art in America, Ms. Haden received the 1999 Binney & Smith Liquitex Excellence in Art Grand Prize award for her painting. In 1989, her paintings were included in the 21st International Painting Exhibition at the Grimaldi Chateau-Museum in Haut-de-Cagnes, France. She was awarded the Juror's First Prize by Judith Zilczer, Curator of Paintings, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington, DC) in the Fairfax County Council of the Arts 1992 Open Exhibition, VA, and Best in Show by Sidney Lawrence, Curator, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington, DC) in the 1999 Artists Equity Exhibition, Rockville, MD. She was selected from among hundreds of Washington area artists by Arlington Arts Center Critic-in-Residence, Ronny Cohen, New York art critic, to participate in the 1990 program of critical review; and in competitions: e.g., in 1999 by Eliza Rathbone, Chief Curator of the Phillips Collection, Washington, DC; in 1998 by Holly Block, Director, Art in General, NY; in 1997 by Susan Sterling, Chief Curator, the National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington, DC); in 1996 by Howard Fox, Curator of Contemporary Art, the Los Angeles Museum of Art (CA); in 1995 by David Ross, Director, the Whitney Museum (NY); in 1994 by Donald Kuspit, renowned national art critic (NY); in 1989 by Helaine Posner, Curator of Contemporary Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington, DC); and in 1987 by Barbara Haskell, Curator of Contemporary Art, the Whitney Museum (NY)
