Exhibition at Soho Triad - NYC
New York - SoHo Triad Fine Arts, 107 Grand Street,
is pleased to announce an exhibition of color photographs by Stephen Wilkes.
NEW WORKS opens on October 24,
with a private reception to be held on October 29. The exhibition continues through December 8.
Stephen Wilkes, well known for his critically acclaimed body of work; ELLIS ISLAND, now explores the nude form in the jungles, on the lava flows, and on the black sand beaches of Hawaii. The exhibition is made up of 20 large format cibachrome prints, mostly ranging in sizes from 30" x 40" to 40" x 50." Wilkes is one of the leading location photographers in the United States. He is recognized for his work in the corporate and advertising industries, for his fine art photography, and for his international works. Photography has been Stephen’s passion since age 12, when his fascination with science led him to take photographs through a microscope. He graduated from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Communications in 1980. In 1982, Wilkes opened his own studio in Manhattan. "Ever since I took my first pictures, photography has always been the joy of discovery for me," says Wilkes. "The excitement not only lies with what I see and how I see it, but mostly when someone looks at the finished photograph and feels the same emotions I felt when I took the picture. There is something sacred about the right moment. The frame where all the energy comes together and, in one instant, a story is told." Wilkes has completed corporate and advertising photography for many of the country’s leading advertising agencies and companies, including American Express, ABB, Maxwell House, Epson, Nike, Sony, AT&T, Visa, Amtrak, Ogilvy & Mather, among others. His editorial work has appeared in Travel & Leisure, Fortune, The New York Times Magazine and Life Magazine. Wilkes was recently commissioned by Epson to create a millennial portrait of the United States. Over a 52-day period, Wilkes crisscrossed the country to record photographic details that capture the mood and texture of America as the new century begins. An exhibition of these photographs traveled to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York to great acclaim. Wilkes has received numerous awards, including American Photographer, The Art Directors Club, Applied Arts Magazine, Graphis and other industry awards. Wilkes also received the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for magazine photography. His work is in the permanent collection of the George Eastman House.
SoHo Triad Fine Arts was founded in 1996; Building on more than 40 years of collective experience, the gallery specializes in a diverse selection of photography by internationally renowned masters and recently established contemporary photographers.
