5 Jahre nach dem Erscheinen Ihres vielbeachteten und erfolgreichen Buches "Grapevine", das von einem Tal in den Appalachen und seinen Bewohnern in West Virginia handelt, nimmt uns Susan Lipper diesmal mit auf eine gemächliche Reise in den tiefen Süden der USA. Straßen- und Landschaftsszenen mit Motels, Straßenschildern und Schnellrestaurants an den Highways bilden die Schauplätze, auf die Lipper Ihren fotografischen Blick fokussiert, um uns ein Bild des amerikanischen Südens zu entwerfen. Die Einfachheit, mit der die fotografischen Gegenstände gezeigt werden, ist von Lipper präzise komponiert, sie spiegelt die Skurrilität amerikanischer Kleinstädte wider, sowie die schwüle Trägheit des Südens und richtet den Blick auf alltägliche Begebenheiten. Die Ausstellung wird begleitet von Texten des Schriftstellers Frederick Barthelme, der selbst aus Mississippi kommt und Autor des Buches "Bob the Gambler" ist. Fotografien von Susan Lipper sind in den Sammlungen zahlreicher Museen vertreten, darunter Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; National Portrait Gallery, London und San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Seit 1981 sind Ihre Fotografien in den USA und England ausgestellt.
