In General
In the outdoor realm, his chief interest has been in footbridges and public squares. Bridges and squares are areas of communicative density. His chief concern is to give them a form that furnishes them with an air of celebration.
Armajani spent many years researching just what a footbridge or a public square is, using models and test situations in order to study the construction and communicative characteristics of squares and bridges as well as the behaviour of the person who uses them. The most monumental footbridge Armajani has built to date is the Irene Hixon Whitney Pedestrian Bridge in Minneapolis (1988).


Sacco and Vanzetti Reading Room
Thus in 1974/75 he created the Dictionary for Building, containing more than 1000 small models. From the experience of the Dictionary for Building, but also from his experience of communicative behaviour and activity, came the first reading rooms and reading gardens, beginning in 1978. In all of these, the intuitive form and the manner of construction serve to bring together elements of space use that may be of assistance with lectures, with concentrated reading, with conversation either as a dialogue or in a group.

From this perspective the Sacco and Vanzetti Reading Room is a combination of "priorities" achieved by the simplest means, making it possible to read, sit and write, but also to lay out magazines and books. The many pencils play a central role, for they are dedicated, like the whole room, to the two Italian emigrants Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. The commitment of these two men to the rights of working people was to prove their undoing. In 1921 they were wrongfully accused of murder. Their execution in the electric chair was carried out six years later, despite worldwide protest.

Allgemeines
Im Außenraum richtete sich sein Interesse vor allem auf Fußgängerbrücken und Plätze. Brücken und Plätze sind Orte von kommunikativer Dichte. Sie so zu gestalten, daß ihnen eine Festlichkeit zukommt, ist sein großes Anliegen.
Was eine Fußgängerbrücke und was ein Platz ist, hat Armajani über viele Jahre an Modellen und Modellsituationen erforscht, indem er sowohl die konstruktiven und kommunikativen Eigenschaften als auch das Verhalten des Menschen, der Plätze und Brücken benutzt, studierte. Die monumentalste der Fußgängerbrücken, die Siah Armajani bisher geschaffen hat, ist die Irene Hixon Whitney Pedestrian Bridge in Minneapolis (1988).


Sacco und Vanzetti Leseraum
So entwickelte er in den Jahren 1974/75 das Wörterbuch des Bauens, mit weit über 1000 kleinen Modellen. Aus der Erfahrung mit dem Wörterbuch des Bauens, aber ebenso aus der Erfahrung des kommunikativen Verhaltens und Handelns, entstanden ab 1978 die ersten Leseräume und Lesegärten. Sie alle vereinen konstruktiv und intuitiv Bereiche, die dem Vortrag, der konzentrierten Lektüre, dem gemeinsamen Gespräch im Dialog oder in der Gruppe dienen.

Aus dieser Perspektive ist der Sacco und Vanzetti Leseraum ein mit einfachsten Mitteln erstellter Verbund von "Prioritäten", der das Lesen, Sitzen und Schreiben, aber auch das Auslegen von Zeitschriften und Büchern ermöglicht. Die vielen Bleistifte spielen eine zentrale Rolle, sind sie doch, wie der gesamte Leseraum, den beiden italienischen Emigranten Nicola Sacco und Bartolomeo Vanzetti gewidmet. Ihr Einstehen für die Rechte der Arbeitnehmer sollte ihnen zum Verhängnis werden. Sie wurden 1921 zu Unrecht für einen Mord verantwortlich gemacht. Die Verurteilung zum Tod auf dem elektrischen Stuhl wurde sechs Jahre später, trotz weltweiten Protests, vollzogen.
