The Reinhard Ernst Museum (mre) is being built in the heart of Germany, in Hesse's capital city, Wiesbaden.
The Opening Exhibition starts 23.06.2024.

Showing the private collection of German entrepreneur Reinhard Ernst, the museum will be the most exciting destination to discover abstract art. Reinhard Ernst' s collection has a rare and unique profile. As described by Prof. Dr. Christoph Zuschlag, the collection's unique feature on an international scale 'is its international orientation, which extends far beyond Europe to include Japan and the USA, its consideration of all-important groups of artists and the comprehensive breadth and quality in which the various tendencies and currents of informal and gestural-abstract art after 1945 are documented.'

As a result, the Reinhard Ernst Museum is one of the few museums in the world devoted exclusively to abstract art. Many of the artists in the Reinhard Ernst Collection are among the most important representatives of modern art. They have had a decisive influence on the central currents of abstraction.

Built by the Pritzker Price award-winning architect Fumihiko Maki, the museum has been conceived as a house of culture for the public, a place of encounter that will contribute to making art and culture tangible as the bonding agent that holds our society together: 'Museum building is community building'.

The driving forces behind the museum are collector and entrepreneur Reinhard Ernst as well as the museum's founding director Dr. Oliver Kornhoff.

Born in 1945 in the Westerwald region (Germany), Reinhard Ernst did not grow up with an affinity for art but encountered it during his professional career. In his own words: "My life-changing encounter with art began when I was already forty years old. On my business trips, I visited museums and discovered my love for abstract art. European Informel, American Abstract Expressionism, and the Japanese abstract art movement became my favorites. In my current collection, there are not only approximately 860 artworks (primarily oil on canvas), but also roughly 50 sculptures. A total of 380 artists are represented in the collection, including Robert Motherwell and Helen Frankenthaler."

Reinhard Ernst can be considered perhaps a collector by chance, he often reflects: "You do not intend to become a collector; you realize at some point that you are one when you have more pictures than wall space at your disposal. You then begin hanging your art in companies and thus recognize how quickly people discuss and interact with art. Even if many people regard art merely as wall decoration, this is often the beginning. The belief that art does not only belong to the collector, but to everyone is a credo I adopted over the course of the years. The decision in the early 1990s to hang art in the corridors and rooms of my company had a strong influence on my attitude."

Dr. Oliver Kornhoff joined the Reinhard Ernst Museum in 2021 to establish it as an 'international center of excellence for abstract art and an effective example of a contemporary understanding of museums. "After spending twelve years as the Director at the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck, Dr. Kornhoff looks forward to opening a museum, where "either the artworks were made especially for the place, or the place was created especially for them. This intertwining of art and architecture, which could hardly be more intimate, creates a unique feature in which the Reinhard Ernst Museum is both an exhibit and an exhibition venue: a building full of art and an artful building."
