David Kordansky Gallery is pleased to present Chromatophoric, Violet Hopkins’ second solo exhibition of exquisitely rendered ink on paper paintings. The opening reception will be on Friday, April 28th from 6 to 9PM. The exhibition will be on view through May 27th.

Hopkins’ new large-scale work envelops viewers with seductive and experimental arrangements of hue and landscape. Sourcing and transmuting traditional nature photography, controlled details of ecological cosmos explode into pure color that dissolves disobediently. Unguided ink interacts with tightly rendered imagery. Chaos sinks into the paper and order rests on the surface. At the edges of the work, uninterrupted pools of pigment emulate forms projected in psychedelic light shows.

The exhibition’s title references the phenomenon of chromatophores, specialized skin cells found in certain species that modulate color to signal arousal, emote fear, lure prey and deceive predators. In Hopkins’ works, vibrant agglomerations of jungles, caves, and reefs camouflage an array of animals, revealing that potent colors incite emotional responses. Awarding agency to color, her lush landscapes blend the fantastic with the authentic while evoking highly visceral states.

Violet Hopkins lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She has recently exhibited at Stuart Shave/Modern Art Inc, London, England, in a two-person exhibition with Lesley Vance. Her work has also been exhibited at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, NY, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Los Angeles, CA, Deitch Projects, New York, NY, David Zwirner Gallery, New York, NY, CRG Gallery, New York, NY, and Taka Ishii Gallery, Tokyo, Japan. Upcoming exhibitions include LAXed: Paintings from the Other Side at Peres Projects/Berlin, Berlin, Germany, and a solo exhibition at Foxy Production, New York, NY, in the fall.
