The Figs Play Fox DeadMarch 24 – April 22, 2006
PRESS RELEASEDavid Kordansky Gallery is pleased to present The Figs Play Fox Dead , a group exhibition of new paintings, drawings, and sculptures by Markus Amm , Aaron Curry, Jay Heikes, Adam McEwen, Alan Michael and Giles Round. The Figs Play Fox Dead opens on Friday, March 24 th at 6pm and is on view through April 22 nd , 2006. The poetic title of the exhibition encourages further reading into the boundaries between abstraction and representation. Oscillating between these two disciplines, the artists in the exhibition approach the genres' inherent definitions and conflicts in conceptual manners. What at first may seem abstract comes to reveal solid references while representational works render abstract lines, patterns and colors. Markus Amm allows abstraction to move toward the concrete with compositions of elementary shapes that subtly allude to the geometries found on American post-punk album covers. Aaron Curry's sculptures and paintings are made of distilled forms complemented by realist images from fashion magazines. Jay Heikes' text-based drawings refer to personas culled out of pornography/pop culture . Adam McEwen's painting of a vast dark field marked with black chewing gum instills the abstract with specific wartime connotations. Alan Michael meticulously executes realistic images into repetitious, fractured compositions. Giles Round creates a sculptural installation of an imaginary stage set that plays with light and theatricality. Markus Amm was part of Formalismus at the Kunstverein Hamburg and has had solo exhibitions at Herald Street, London, England, The Breeder Project, Athens, Greece and Galerie Karin Guenther Nina Borgmann, Hamburg, Germany. He will have a solo show at David Kordansky Gallery in November 2006. Aaron Curry will exhibit at Hiromi Yoshii, Tokyo, Japan this summer. He has exhibited works at the Wight Gallery, Los Angeles, Foxy Production, New York and will have a solo exhibition at David Kordansky gallery in October 2006.
