David Kordansky Gallery is pleased to present Diminished Returns / Innocent Eyes, the first Los Angeles solo exhibition of New York artist Sean Dack. The installation is comprised of ten unique c-prints. The opening reception will take place on Friday, January 6th at 6 pm. The exhibition will be on view through February 4th.
Sean Dack scours the "media fog" of the Internet for images and live video feeds and finds photographic self-portraits on web logs and other websites. His artistic method is a hybrid of traditional photographic techniques and digital imaging. Dack extracts the images from the Internet sites. He records them directly onto videotape then video projects them onto chromogenic print paper and intervenes using his hand to adjust the amount of light used for the exposure. Each print is unique as no negatives are involved. The resulting unaltered images are abstract dichromatic photos in molten red and black.
The female subjects in these images are non-subjects. Although originally taken as self-portraits to be placed on blogs or streamed on video feeds, Dack's intervening hand makes them appropriated self-portraits or unwitting portraits. Is he a surveillant of the Internet or a portrait photographer? He examines a conflux between the private and the public. The young women consciously put their images onto the Internet, offering abstracted glimpses into their personal worlds, but only temporally. Dack immortalizes these moments of virtual detritus.
Sean Dack's work was in the recent exhibition Thank You for the Music, at Galerie Sprüth Magers, Munich, Germany and has had solo exhibitions at Daniel Reich Gallery, New York and the Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt, Germany. He was part of a two-person exhibition with Liam Gillick, Sean Dack and Liam Gillick, A Film, A Clip, A Documentary, Corvi-Mora, London, England and exhibited Trailer, part of Man in the Holoscene, curated by Tom Morton and Catherine Patha w/ Liam Gillick, London, England. Currently he is in the group exhibition Uncertain States of America, curated by Daniel Birnbaum, Gunnar B. Kvaran, and Hans Ulrich Obrist, Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo, Norway, Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris, France, Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, Reykjavik Art Museum, Reykjavik, Iceland.
