About the work (english / deutsch)

57 Penguins
There are 57 of them - quite simply because the artist was born in 1957. In Spring 1991 he hewed the penguins from the upper part of 54 pieces of square timber. The whole undertaking took him a mere ten days and ten nights. On the one hand, because the tropical wawa wood is relatively soft, and, on the other, because he worked with such concentration that his own movement became, as it were, transposed onto the birds. Each of these sculptures is an individual being, with a physical stance unique to it, and yet part of a community, which as a whole patently emphasizes the peculiarities of each bird. Balkenhol's swift work generates a sort of "three-dimensional sketch", as if he had wanted to make sure that he did not constrain the penguins' freedom of movement.
I understand this artwork as if it were a circular surface of stones by Richard Long, produced by an artist who, roughly one Generation later, has lent the notion of the similar and the dissimilar, of order and disorder, a figural form that is actually intrinsic to nature.
But why penguins? Well that is a question which Daniele Del Giudice already answered: "They head south in desperate haste," he says, describing a group of Adélie penguins. "Their useless little wings raised, their beaks pointing forward, their small feet pointing outwards, keeping their balance with their tails as if they were miniature tripods; they seem so funny with their attentive and worried expression. It is as if they wanted to say: I'm late, I'm late for a very important date,' to repeat a phrase from Alice in Wonderland."

57 Pinguine
