About the work

THE LAST SUPPER
Mercer Union - Project Room Installation
Toronto, September 10 - October 31, 1998

Alstad's installation of the Last Supper for the project room responds to a New York Times article entitled 'What's Cooking on Death Row' which reported on the last meals of the 144 men executed by the state of Texas in the last 15 years. The significance of the requests reveal a complexity of emotions and personalities which make the people on death row all the more real and less a number. For the installation, Alstad has created a series of "commemorative plates" with images of the last requested meals along with the execution dates of the prisoners on death row.

Press Clip: 'Shame Garnishes Farewell Dinners': "Michael Alstad's chillingly beautiful installation 'The Last Supper' is a quiet, meditative counterpoint to the macabre 'cool factor' of capital punishment. There is no hysteria in this exhibit, no glamorisation of either the criminals or the crimes of the state. Nor, conversely, is Alstad's work yet another vigil candle in a paper cup, wet with guilty liberal tears. It will, however, make you cry."
