About the work (english / deutsch)

About the work (english / deutsch)

Little did Albert Jones realize, when he discovered the process of corrugating paper over 100 years ago, that today a young artist from Frankfurt, Germany would be using this product as the primary material for his art. After studying classical painting and drawing with Werner Boettinger, a student of famed German expressionist painters Beckmann and Junghans, Stolte began his search for a material that could express both his socio-political ideas as well as his artistic vision.

It was a case of pure serendipity that brought Juergen together with corrugated for the first time in 1983. At that time, the studio where he painted was located adjacent to a corrugating factory and Stolte's fascination with the plant, the process, and the material proved to be the answer to his search. Corrugated is first and foremost an environmentally friendly product. It is both imminently recyclable itself as well as being made almost exclusively from recyecled materials. Secondly its history as an artistic medium is virtually non-existent, thereby giving Stolte the freedom to create and explore an entire New World.

Corrugated is a material without pretension or lofty aspirations, while art is arguably the most valued product of human civilization. This combination of the mighty and the meek suits the convictions of Juergen Stolte very well. Lastly, corrugated consists of layers, and it is the investigation of the question "what lies beneath"' that ultimately fuels the artistic drive of Juergen Stolte.

The majority of Stolte's early works consisted largely of a combination of painting, drawing and decollage. Where simple collage is basically an additive process decollage is a combination of both additive and subtractive techniques. Areas of the chosen medium are first ripped or burnt away, revealing the previously hidden layers, the material is then drawn or painted upon.

In the early 90's Stolte began experimenting with the creation of large-scale sculpture. He began by first laminating hundreds of sheets of corrugated together to form large blocks. Then, with the use of a high powered chain saw and his fertile imagination, he began carving these blocks into sculptures. Sometimes the results were simply humorous charicatures of familiar references to everyday life. Other times, they are dignified introspective giants carved from so many bits and pieces of paper salvaged from our throwaway world.

Stolte has gained respect for his work both amongst members of the art community as well as those directly involved in the corrugated industry. His exhibition schedule during the last 15 years reveals an equal balance between gallery, museum, and public art exhibitions on the one hand and corrugated trade shows and conferences on the other.

This acceptance by both the art and business world is an unusual status for an artist to hold and it is one that Stolte is particularly proud of. Like the material that he has chosen to employ, the work of Juergen Stolte can be viewed on many levels. At first glance it can be seen as a playful humorous, curiosity, but "what lies beneath" is this artist's ongoing exploration into the complexity and mystery of human relationships.
