About the work

About the work

(Most / some) American art is normally closed + cagey, just like (most)some Americans (America here refers to citizens of the United States of America). My closest link was to black/ African-America. (Most/some/all)Americans specialize on + on + further + further + over + over in a panicked attempt at individual independence. It is important for me to write that I am working in the first instance for myself.

The "sites" list is to provide a list of what I come across, to stimulate research and communication / dialogue. Site suggestions and comments are welcome, and I will respond if I can (because my life is complicated and is so for everyone in principle, I am wary of making promises I can't keep--but you never know). The website will change with time sporadically. In trying not to edit, I hope to expose, share, and address strengths and weaknesses in my educational and personal formation as a human being.

"If a woman has a problem and she tells it to a woman, the woman sympathizes. If a woman has a problem and she tells it to a man, he wants to resolve it." Quote about the female and male temperaments from Canadian painter/ singer/songwriter/performer Joni Mitchell in "Border Crossings" Magazine (Canada), issue no. 77, 2001, p.27.

My work is primarily directed at a gay/homosexual/queer white male American, European, and world audience and anyone else who is interested. I cannot claim to speak for everyone and it is important for me to acknowledge this. I cannot even claim to speak for my future self in terms of experience and increased knowledge and perspective on life and art. I am however very interested in the forms of human reality on the earth, even though it is not always easy for me to see beyond myself (and as a corollary not always easy for me to deal with myself and therefore, admittedly, other people and even their artwork). I hope also that what I do will in some way help and affirm people who do not come from my specific background and situation. I do respond most strongly to people and artwork that relate to my own orientation in life. I am not sure but am considering if this will perhaps change in future life years for me.
Anyone who is interested in my work, even though it is made from a specific perspective based on my social reality as an artist and my subjective background, feelings, knowledge and lived experience--anyone who is interested is welcome! This includes those who don't like what they see and read, and can use the work for dialogue and a learning experience. But I do hope in the first instance that the work and website are affirmative for men in similar positions to me and my husband (married for the first time in possible world history in Amsterdam, April 6, 2001)--and men, especially artists, who have had to leave the United States to live their lives to the fullest and enjoy their love interests in life partnership.

I feel intuitively that the problem lies in the United States educational system and media, especially with regard to individual body consciousness and existentialism and the way female sexuality, with regard to females and female intelligence and wisdom, is suppressed. I am convinced that increased visibility of female lesbian, queer and heterosexual-created media products and films and writing (direction, writing of scripts, production), influence in education, and especially increased visibility of female lesbian, queer and heterosexual created products in art--combining specific human background with lived experience, and increased importance of domesticity as a cultural subject and careful deprivatization--will be responsible (almost solely) for the redress in the world order.

The SOLE measure of artistic success is domestic (whatever your domestic situation may be, ANYTHING) and personal success, centeredness, and feeling of personal accomplishment and overcoming of personal challenges. This goes for New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Rome, Kampala, Johannesburg, Sydney, Beijing, Tokyo, Vladivostock, St. Petersburg, Regina, Toronto, Helsinki, Vienna, Madrid, Sao Paulo, Mexico City, Topeka, St. Louis, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Tucson, Santa Fe, Haifa, Kuala Lumpur, Goa, New Delhi, Dubai, Skopje, and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on. IT MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING DIFFERENCE WHAT THE ART MEDIA OR COMMUNITY OF CURATORS, DIRECTORS, COLLECTORS, GALLERISTS, ACADEMICS, THEORISTS, ARTISTS, ETC., ETC., ETC., ETC., THINK OR WRITE OR DO OR SAY IF YOU DO NOT FEEL A SENSE OF PERSONAL ACCOMPLISHMENT IN YOUR WORK AND LIFE. ART IS A JOB AND A CHOICE THAT YOU MAKE IN YOUR LIFE DO NOT FORGET THIS EVER, THERE IS MUCH MORE TO YOU AND YOUR WORTH THAN MARKET AND PUBLIC SUCCESS AND I CAN ALMOST GUARANTEE THAT IF YOU FEEL A SENSE OF PERSONAL ACCOMPLISHMENT AND THAT YOU'VE BUILT UP A CARING CIRCLE OF FRIENDS AND PERSONAL SUPPORT SYSTEM AROUND YOU AND WITH YOU IN YOUR OWN ARTISTIC COMMUNITY AND LIFE THAT YOU WILL FEEL LIKE A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE STAR ALONG WITH MANY MANY OTHERS AND THAT YOU WILL HAVE ROLE MODELS AND BE A ROLE MODEL FOR BUDDING LITTLE PEOPLE. I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT BY HARD EXPERIENCE REALITY AND A FRAGMENTED SHIFT AND PULL TO CLARIFY AND FOCUS MY LIFE. AND DON'T GET ME WRONG, IT IS NOT OVER (THE STRUGGLE) UNTIL IT'S OVER--UNTIL YOU DIE, WHICH IS "SYNCRETIC" WITH LIFE AND NOT SAD, IT'S A CAUSE TO CELEBRATE AND REMEMBER, AS AMALIA MESA-BAINS HAS SAID AND WRITTEN. AND ABOUT COURAGE: YOU COULD BE HIT BY A CAR AND DIE TOMORROW OR TODAY OR IN ONE HOUR OR SO AS COULD I, THIS IS A REASON TO FOLLOW YOUR HEART AND TRY ANYTHING YOU CAN THINK OF YOU WANT WHICH DOES NOT CONSCIOUSLY HURT ANYBODY ELSE AND THEN THERE IS NEVER ANY GUILT ONLY LEARNING--THIS INCLUDES PERSONAL AND DOMESTIC LOCAL PROJECTS AS WELL AS REACHING OUT AND CONTACTING PEOPLE IN A GOSSAMER WEB UNCLEAR WHAT THE PURPOSE IS EXCEPT INTRODUCTION AND SHARING LOVE ENERGY IF YOU CAN GLOBALLY. Think about where your work might be in 200 years we will die we are one of many many many where will your work be in 200 years where would you want it to be who is really important to you? art is personal even when political not a general statement (art) at the end of the day. The best trick to give yourself courage in my opinion is to imagine how you would want to be treated in the art community (credit: Marcia Tucker) from a well-intentioned, serious person and remember that in your art contacts and when you want or feel you need to contact someone, and when they contact you. And remember, we all like to be "begged" and told how much we've affected others positively when it is true--you only have one life and time period to say these things most likely. IT SOUNDS OUTDATED PERHAPS BUT I THINK IT MAY BE ETERNAL: TRUST YOUR INSTINCT AND INTUITION THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BAD TRUE INSTINCT, THE ONES WHO SEEM TO FEEL GUILTY ARE THE ONES TAKING ON TOOO MUCH RESPONSIBILITY AND CHALLENGING THEMSELVES AS HUMAN BEINGS. WHAT ABOUT PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT SIGHTED IN TERMS OF VISUAL ART? THERE ARE NO CLEAR ANSWERS BUT WITH TRUE LOVE ENERGY STRUGGLING THROUGH LIFE THIS IS WHAT KEEPS US GOING. THINK ABOUT WHY YOU ARE MAKING ART, TO MEAN SOMETHING DOMESTICALLY TO OTHER HUMANS, NOT FOR MUSEUMS AND OTHER DEAD REPOSITORIES (THEY CAN ONLY HELP PRESERVE) THE MEANING OF YOUR WORK WILL MOST LIKELY BE FELT ON A VERY NORMAL, DOWN TO EARTH, UNEDUCATED, SINGLE SCALE AND THIS FEELING IN YOUR HEART WILL INFORM YOUR WORK. I'M NOT TRYING TO TELL YOU AS IF YOU DON'T KNOW, THIS IS A SHARING OF MY FEELINGS, HOW I WOULD WANT IT TOLD TO ME.
