About the work (english / deutsch)

Yellow And Green Brushstrokes
Lichtenstein took comic strips as the basisfor the two pictures We Rose Up Slowly, made in 1964, and Yellow And Green Brushstrokes, produced two years later. The example of the large-format painting Yellow And Green Brushstrokes shows some further characteristics of Roy Lichtenstein's approach. As indicated in the title, the surface is covered with yellow and green strokes apparently painted spontaneously and with verve. Both the blue dot matrix of the background as well as the superimposed green and yellow strokes strengthen the dynamism of the composition. By contrast, the clearly recognizable precise and accurate form of painting undermines the motif, so that the picture becomes an ironic and critical paraphrase an the painting of Abstract Expressionism. The ornamental stylization of the strokes to the status of formula highlights that the emotions so intrinsic to an act of gestural painting are absent here. With this picture, Lichtenstein created a work that showed Abstract Expressionism, at the time at its apogee, to be history and at the same time averred that the movement would be overcome by Pop Art. The latter itself integrated motifs of art history into its works as quotations of reality, thus putting fonward a new claim to absolute truth in the contemporary art of the 1960s.

Yellow And Green Brushstrokes
